Hurricane Sandy Research Papers

The introduction must give sufficient background information on the primary source and research already conducted on the topic.  The introduction must also identify the gap in the research that you intend to fill.  This information should lead up to the research question and argumentative thesis.

The thesis must be argumentative and provide the organization for the rest of the paper.  It must have at least three parts: text-specific, connecting (to other parts of the text or to secondary text analyses), and expansive (how these analyses contribute to themes in the book).

Each paragraph is focused and provides a logical development of ideas.  (Topic sentences are claim-based, in direct relation to the thesis, and provide a preview to what will be discussed in the paragraph).

Analysis of the primary text takes precedence in most (if not all) body paragraphs.  The analysis must be text-specific.  In other words, it will focus on literary elements such as diction, figurative language, symbolism, character, point of view, setting, etc, as presented in direct quotations.  The analysis should look at the details of the text, discuss the implications of those details, and consider how they contribute to themes in the text.

Body paragraphs must incorporate secondary sources as voices that support your argument or argue against your points.  When incorporating these sources, represent their ideas fairly.  Use the points brought up by these sources to complicate/expand upon your argument.

At least one naysayer must be incorporated into your argument.  Use of the naysayer must ultimately strengthen your argument.

Transitions, both at the beginning or paragraphs and within paragraphs, are used to effectively guide your reader from one idea to the next.

The paper has few, if any, grammatical errors or unclear sentences.  Ideas are expressed with clarity and concision.

The paper is in MLA format with proper in-text citations of sources.  The paper must be in 12-point Times New Roman font and double spaced.  Block quotes are used only when absolutely necessary and not to simply fill space. The Works Cited page includes your primary source(s) and eight additional sources. (See Easy Writer for sample papers in MLA format and information on in-text citations and works cited pages).

The paper meets the page requirement (8-10 pages, not including the Works Cited page).
