In American English schwa deletes (syncopates) in unstressed position following a stressed syllable. The syncope is constrained by the surrounding consonantal context. Examine the following data and develop an analysis that accounts for when syncope occurs and when it is blocked. Be explicit about the sonority scale that you are assuming. What must be assumed about the relative sonority of [r] and [l]? What is the connection between the clusters that result from syncope and permissible onsets in English? In these data, the vowels of interest are in brackets.
