Language Development in Preschoolers and Kindergarteners. Read Chapter 6, 7 and 8 of the class text, as well as the articles from ProQuest.
Language knowledge develops during the preschool years to prepare students for success in kindergarten and beyond. Preschool education and the government funding that supports it has been a consistent topic of debate since its conception. Given what you have learned about the importance of developmentally appropriate methodologies in respect to learning and to the continued support of preschool and early education programs, what do you think of giving iPads to kindergartens or having prom in preschool? Support your argument with evidence to prove the developmental appropriateness or inappropriateness of either. If you had a child in either program, what would you do? Why? In addition address how the program could impact support and /or funding for early education programs.
Early Literacy. Read Chapter 8 of the class text and watch a minimum of three videos available from the ReadingRockets website (http://www.readingrockets.org/podcasts/earlylit).
Identify the videos you watched and provide a brief synopsis of your favorite. Discuss the methods and strategies that were used or presented in the video. Identify the curriculum presented that supported language acquisition and explain how they are developmentally appropriate. How do they address the five aspects of language? Would you use any of the ideas presented in your own classroom? Or with your own children?
