Liberal Individualism and the Crisis of Citizenship

This week we will continue with our readings from the American Government Reader; Liberal Individualism and the Crisis of Citizenship, p. 15. Our lesson this week revolved around the issue of Federalism and the flow of power between the states and the federal government in order for this nation to be successful. The essay will relate how we, as individuals contribute to our society through our activities or lack thereof.
There have been many studies about the decline of participation by citizens in our political system as well as studies on whether Americans are depending on the government or upon their own skills and talents. The authors of this essay, a summarization of the book Habits of the Heart, have tried to relate that the crisis we have today is not one of apathy, but is one from our pursuit of “individualism”.
After reading this essay, I want you to
1) Summarize how the issue of individualism is related to cancer in the readings and determine if you agree or disagree with this statement.
2) Define the term social capital and how the loss of this resource has contributed to the crisis of civic membership. Remember, civic membership is more than just being in a recreational sports league, signing up your children for soccer, or even being in a local event.
3) Lastly, discuss what the authors believed caused the failure of family values (which are pretty much out of line with the political correct crowd today) or the failure of the community involvement. (there are social and economic reasons)
