Morgan Spurlock’s Sundance award-winning film Super Size Me is an excellent documentary. Spurlock combines facts and statistics from professionals in the fields of health and medicine with interviews with “the man on the street” to create a fast-moving work that is as entertaining as it is informative. His juxtaposition of classical art and music with popular culture is the “icing on the cake” that keeps the viewer’s interest in what could have been a boring documentary in the hands of another filmmaker. In addition, Spurlock presents himself and his family in such a way that his audience both likes and trusts him.
Write an essay in which you support the thesis that Spurlock’s documentary is an excellent film.
You should consider the topics we discussed in class such as his appeals to both our logic and our emotions, his use of humor, the way he teaches without offending, the characters he introduces: professionals, people on the street, and his own family and friends.
In other words, notice the way he “shows” us the harm bad food can do instead of just “telling” us.
You may also consider his excellent use of art and music in the film.
Follow MLA format. Your papers should be approximately 4-5 double-spaced, typed pages in length. As usual, I will be looking for clear style, correct grammar/mechanics, as well as accurate and interesting content. Be sure to use concrete details and specific information to support your thesis.
