In an organization sometimes experts are called in for advice or to solve problems that if not handled properly, would be detrimental to the organization. By calling in an expert the organization is hoping to gain specific knowledge about the problem and or area. One advantage to utilizing an Expert system would cut some labor costs in the admissions office. Antiquated systems and procedures would be displaced by the Expert systems. Even though ESs is a system it will still need a human to enter data such as facts, rules-of-thumb and personal experience (Hood, 1992).
It would seem that for students who are applying for admissions to the university the, ESs would look at applicants and score or rank them accordingly but the admission managers would make final decisions as to whether the student is accepted or not. The University could apply a neural network its admissions process but at the end of the day, artificial intelligence still needs human knowledge. I would imagine that if a student were denied admission to the university due to the involvement of an expert system, and the parents found out, that some sort of appeal or grievance would be filed with the school. Two disadvantages of a neural network are the generalization of information and difficulty of interpreting the data.
Expert systems are computer systems that make an attempt to impersonate human experts by employing knowledge in a particular domain (Rainer, Prince, & Watson, 2013). Expert systems have been cultivated in such various sections such as business, engineering, science, and medicine. In these sections, they have improved the value effectiveness, and challenging control of the businesses utilizing the technology (Owston & Widerman, 1991). Having an expert system could be beneficial if it could be used in universities when it comes to the admission procedure. Expert systems can reduce the workload for the office of admission, although they would be the one to appoint the final decision. Expert system would make available constructive information, suggestions, and assess applicants. Other benefits may include the rise of quality in advise of applicants, reliable (wouldn’t become fatigue or weary, call in sick, or go on strike), and lessen decision making period (Rainer, Prince, & Watson, 2013).
A neural network to this process could be applied. A neural network is a coordination of programs and information arrangement that conjure up the fundamental conception of the biological brain (Rainer, Prince, & Watson, 2013). Neural networks are mainly proficient at distinguishing faint, concealed, and recently promising prototype contained by compound information, as well as taking to mean partial inputs (Owston & Widerman, 1991). Having a neural network, to support expert system in the admission process, will assist answer an extensive sort of glitch that may configure.
Although the expert system may be a beneficial for universities, if a student would be denied admission to the university and the student’s parents discovered that an expert system had been involved in the admissions, they would not be satisfied with the results. The parents might feel that the expert system is not as good as having human experts to hand (Owston & Widerman, 1991). They may also feel that the expert system will not give the proper feedback they’ll be searching for.
