The discussion of how different countries’ governments are involved in the innovation process is a reflection of the culture of those countries. How do you believe the culture of the country in which your selected business is located and its view of innovation influence the organization’s climate for innovation? What should managers take into consideration when planning for innovation based on these factors? Respond in a substantive nature to at least two other students’ posts.
A) The culture in the United States has become much more apt to having technology at its finger tips within the last 15 years. Apple Computer Incorporated is located in one of the main frame countries for new innovations. Americans are always looking for the newest technology and the latest software as it becomes available. I think this fact influences Apple Computers climate for innovation because they want to be the one of those manufacturers that people are raving about and choosing as their main source of information and technology. People always want to be able to handle their business faster and more efficient. Additionally, they want to have access to their important information, such as Email, wherever they may be. Apple Computer recognizes that and in addition to manufacturing pc’s, have taken the world by storm with the iPhone to give people the satisfaction of being able to take their personal computer on the go with them.
When planning for innovations, managers should take into consideration their target audience. Nowadays, adults aren’t the only ones taking advantage of technology; more children under the age of 13 are interested in it as well, not to mention smaller children. Apple has created a new device to allow small children to use the iPad and iPhone called the Apptivity case. This case keeps the device safe while small children are using it.
B) The governments of different countries play a significant part in a company’s research and development planning activity. Regulations and legal requirements must always be considered. According to our text, in the United States, the government contributes approximately 30 to 40 percent of annual research and development spending. This contribution typically comes in the form of grants to businesses and academic institutions. In Korea, there is a National R&D Ministry of Science and Technology that generally directs areas of R &D focus in the country. A similar organization and model exists in China (White & Burton, 2011, pg.112). The organization I am focusing on for this course is Amazon.com, Inc. headquartered in the US. Due to the nature of the business and the types of products sold on their retail websites, creativity and innovation are necessary ingredients for success. In addition to selling their retail products and products from other manufacturers, Amazon manufactures Kindle e-readers and sells electronic content for their Kindle products. They are always looking for innovation and new technology to sell to their customers as well as innovative ways to improve their internal processes. Managers should take innovation and creativity in to consideration and plan to provide resources and time to allow ideas to develop and come forward. Managers should also take a look at their processes on a regular basis and think about what causes stress and frustration in their work area or look for road blocks in their business processes as these elements can also encourage innovation and creative ways to solve problems.
How does implementation differ for product innovation and process innovation? Which of the four key issues do you believe is most affected? Explain. Respond in a substantive nature to at least two other students’ posts.
A) The Four elements of implementation are Leadership, Engagement, Extension, and Alignment (White & Burton, 2011). Each of these four elements are important for both process innovation and product innovation implementations. All elements must be carefully coordinated to assure successful and effective implementation. The implementation of new product innovation requires a stronger focus on the engagement and extension elements. These elements have to do with knowledge management, information sharing, and the evaluation and control aspects. Process innovation implementation requires a greater focus on the alignment and leadership elements. These deal more with resources and rewarding desired behavior. I personally believe Engagement is most affected in any type of implementation. Employees at any level of the organization need to have the knowledge to understand why this product or process is important to them as well as why customer (internal and external) should care about the change. When employees are engaged, they are generally more willing to work together to assure success. I am a firm believer in Change Management. In my organization, we use the ADKAR method (Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, and Reinforcement) of managing change with all of our product and process implementations. When employees, regardless of their title or level in the company, are aware of change, understand why it is important, receive training or knowledge transfer, and have a reason to want the change to be successful, they typically become engaged. Engagement makes the other 3 elements of implementation more successful.
B) Implementation differs for product innovation and process innovation. This is because of the four key issues, engagement and extension are focused more for product and alignment and leadership have a greater focus with process. According to White, “New product development, product improvements, and new market entry all depend on extension processes” (White, 2011, pg. 137). Leading into alignment, “It has been noted that the firm should have a wide variety of systems to facilitate an innovation strategy–this is process” (White, 2011, pg. 141). All four of the key elements (Leadership, Engagement, Extension, and Alignment) are for product and for process innovation.
I believe that the issue that is most affected is extension because this has to do with the firm “having sufficient knowledge of product and market competencies so new ideas lead to action” (White, 2011, pg. 137). This includes previous lessons learned from the past to help guide the new ideas. I feel like this involves a lot of work because it is compiling ideas with current competition, all while holding knowledge on the product. A lot of time needs to go into extension since it ensures that product and market competencies are able to lead to innovation by having sufficient knowledge of the product.
